Why do teambuilding and leadership development on a sailboat?
Sailing requires clear communication, a focus on common objectives, cooperation, determination, and rapid problem analysis and solution – often applying skills that are developing or newly acquired.  Successful sailing rewards genuine teamwork and leadership and demonstrates where it is lacking. The sea is a powerful catalyst for evolution of team dynamics and for enhanced individual awareness.

How will the learning aboard sailboats transfer to my workplace?
The learning challenges set up by the Captains Courageous staff are particularly designed for your group. We create situations afloat that evoke parallel issues to those facing your company and your team, requiring the rapid development and deployment of strategies to address them – and we facilitate your process toward more effective awareness, decision-making and implementation. Our goal is to create an experience that transforms how your teams and leaders work together, one that has a real and lasting impact on your company’s bottom line. Should you desire, we offer follow-up coaching to assist in the integration of new practices and learning developed through Captains Courageous

Do I need to have any sailing experience?
No. In fact, previous sailing experience can sometimes get in the way of the new learning which takes place on these adventures. In terms of the purpose and content of the adventure, everyone starts on even ground. Those with sailing experience are at no advantage, and may in fact have an extra challenge of setting aside the temptation to think that they know the path to the desired outcome because of their prior experience. The adventure is about the processes that develop among the participants, not just about the activity of sailing. The prior experience of one or more people just becomes another ingredient for the individual and the group as a whole to work with.

How much will I learn about sailing?
You will learn a great deal about how you and others lead and collaborate, and you will learn enough basics about sailing to participate fully in that experience. You will learn enough about sailing to know whether it interests you as a sport or recreation, and whether you want to pursue greater competence. While the basics of sailing can be learned in one afternoon, mastery takes a lifetime.

Is there any danger involved?
Sailing with Captains Courageous is quite safe. Our boats will have a Captains Courageous staff member and facilitator aboard with experience in all aspects of sailing and well capable of meeting any challenge likely to arise on the water.  We request that all participants wear personal flotation devices and appropriate clothing and sunscreen when under sail, and that any weaknesses in swimming or basic balance of a participant be revealed to our staff at the outset.

What about inclement weather?  As in any business environment, unexpected challenges arise and must be met.  We can adjust to many different sailing conditions, and we will use the weather as a part of the learning experience. In the event of rain, we will sail, wearing appropriate gear.  In the very rare event of weather conditions making it unsafe for us to sail, we will have alternate land-based plans in place.

Will I get seasick?
Probably not. Most of our sailing adventures take place on relatively calm waters.  For those with a particular tendency toward motion sickness, there are common preventative measures and antidotes readily available, and we will provide recommendations once your adventure is scheduled.

What do I need to bring?
We will provide a complete checklist for you once your adventure is scheduled.

What about food and drink?
We’ll have plenty of water, soft drinks and snacks aboard; and meals will be provided if we are out during mealtimes.  There’s no smoking or alcohol permitted aboard our boats.
